May is Perfect Posture Month!

From the Chiropractic Miracles Newsletter

Stand Up STRAIGHT… Please Don’t SLOUCH…
I have often seen beautiful/handsome people with poor posture and thought, "What a shame!" Wonderful posture is the ultimate fashion statement.

But posture is not only about looking great, your posture is a window to your health.

Posture is one of the most overlooked keys to best health and performance. Good posture not only improves fitness, thinking ability, emotional state and general vitality, it can actually help reverse the aging process, not just cosmetically, but functionally.

It’s Time to Get the Facts STRAIGHT…Just as proper attention to teeth can prevent problems later in life, proper attention to the development of PERFECT POSTURE will prevent deterioration of your health in the future.

Corrective chiropractic care insures good posture by aligning your spine so the muscles, joints and ligaments can work as nature intended. Good posture contributes to the normal functioning of the nerve system and affects the ability of your body’s organs to function at peak efficiency. For over 10 years, I have committed to directing people to the awareness that proper spinal alignment is the MOST IMPORTANT factor affecting perfect posture and maximum health and vitality.

Almost everyone can avoid or reverse the problems caused by poor posture at any age. There is no greater miracle in nature than the body’s ability to heal and correct itself. Balancing postural distortions and reducing structural stress through chiropractic adjustments releases the power within you. The result is healing energy that strengthens and normalizes your immune and nerve systems, all of which helps to increase your personal power.

Cultural Revolution

Last night I attended a wonderful lecture with Sandor Katz, author of Wild Fermentation and The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved, at Cheryl's Herb's in Maplewood. It was so interesting to hear about the varieties of fermented foods. I had not realized that most everyone eats a food that is, at least in part, a product of fermentation each and every day. It's not just sauerkraut, think about coffee, bread, cheese and vinegar.

One thing Sandor explained for us is the "War on Bacteria." Did you know that the bacteria living in your body outnumbers your body's own cells ten to one?! This resident community of bacteria helps us digest our foods, produces essential nutrients like B vitamins, and enhances our immune system. Consider also the over-use of antibiotic medications and antibacterial products. Most of us think about prescription drugs when we think of antibiotics, which is certainly a factor. However, there are also so many antibiotics are used in factory farming that our water sources are universally contaminated with the drugs. Our internal ecosystems are under attack! Naturally fermented, unpasteurized foods have a variety of health benefits including nourishing and repopulating our body with beneficial bacteria.

Autonomy was another theme from last nights talk. In the last century our culture has moved away from foods of local origin to foods produced and shipped across vast distances. In order to stay edible during this journey the foods must be processed in such a way that maximizes shelf life but devastates nutritional value. The ancient practice of natural fermentation of foods was one way that people could "process" their locally grown, whole foods for longer shelf life, as well as to enhance digestibility, health benefits and flavor. When we prepare our own foods with simple, ancient practices of culturing and fermentation we exercise a measure of "food-autonomy" and move towards choices that are better for our health and the health of our community and our planet.

It was truly an inspiring evening. I recommend that you check out Sandor's website.

I can hardly wait to get some sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir started in my kitchen!

No, no, Milo!

I am having some good times with my 15-month old son, Milo. He and I and our friend "NO!"
You see, Milo is always making mischief. He loves to toddle over to the dishwasher and try to crawl in. He loves to put anything and everything in his mouth. He loves to squirm and try to flip off the dressing table. He loves to stand up in the slippery bath tub. He loves to use his "Kung Fu Grip" to latch onto my hair, my glasses, the cat's tail.
Consequently, he hears "No" pretty frequently.
Is it any wonder that he also says "no" a lot as well?
Sometimes as he toddles around the room he mutters "No, no, Milo" to himself! We've got to teach this kid some new words! On the other hand, I respect the strength and economy of Milo's favorite word. Here are some of the things that I like about NO.
  • NO gets your attention.
  • NO is unambiguous.
  • NO may free you from drains on your time and energy.
  • NO will help you raise your standards.
  • NO can be used gently or forcefully as needed.
  • Sometimes when you say NO you are really saying YES to what is most true, most useful, most right or most worthy.

I'm not talking about being a jerk, I am just saying that we all need boundaries. I was reminded recently to practice flexing my "No Muscle." Like many people, and I think women in particular, I aim to please. I find it much, much easier to say "I'd be happy to." Interestingly, sometimes saying "Yes" to things we shouldn't can be a disservice to the people we are trying to please. We may deny them the opportunity to figure something out for themselves. We may be giving them a fish instead of teaching them to fish.

Enough musings on the "No Muscle."

I'm planning to work on teaching Milo to say "Hugs" next.

What Is Your Philosophy of Health?

What is your “Philosophy of life?” What are the beliefs and values by which you live? We don’t often discuss our philosophy with others, however the choices that we make and the actions we take in everyday life reveal our beliefs and values. For example, if our philosophy of life places high value on working hard, we will probably work hard all of our lives and find great satisfaction in such work.
Our parents often share their philosophy with us as children. “Pretty is as pretty does” is a proverb mothers sometimes used to teach their daughters their own belief that a person’s character is more important than their appearance. Learning life philosophies from our parents is a very valuable part of growing up. Other philosophies are handed down in families as well, including the “philosophy of health.” Of course, we live in the age of advertising. Drug advertisements are all over the internet, tv channels and magazines. Thousands and thousands of drugs are easily accessible. This may override the healthcare values and practices we were taught when we were younger. Today, there are two opposing healthcare philosophies becoming more visible. The first is allopathic medicine. This is a mechanistic approach to health in which the body is divided into different systems and a medical doctor who focuses solely on this system is considered a “specialist.” For example, cardiologists are heart specialists and respiratory specialists focus on the lungs and respiratory system. These doctors diagnose their patient’s illness by examining smaller parts of the whole structure. A condition is diagnosed by gathering test results and symptomatology, then introducing a treatment, usually drugs, in hopes the medication will relieve the symptoms and restore the sick body to health.
This approach disregards the understanding that the human body is very intelligent and is fully capable of healing the body of disease and weakness. This human intelligence needs no help, other than a fully functioning nerve system. Sometimes the body may deteriorate so badly that it needs drug intervention to sustain life until the body can regain its ability to heal itself.
The second health care philosophy is chiropractic care. The chiropractic philosophy of health focuses on YOU and is centered on the philosophy that the human body, being knit together in a wonderful way, will heal itself given the right opportunity and circumstances. The passion for the Doctor of Chiropractic is to promote the healing process by locating and removing any interference or blockage in the nerve system, which may be interfering with your ability to express your maximum health potential.
The philosophy of chiropractic encourages us to take control of our own health, listen to the messages our body is sending us, and get to the cause of the problem instead of simply covering it up with medication.
What is your “philosophy of health?” If you suffer from pain or illness and desire a long-term solution to optimal health, make an appointment TODAY to visit your chiropractor. If you value your body’s ability to heal itself and you believe natural approaches are best, choose the philosophy of chiropractic care. You will be glad you did!
Before we move ahead, let me first thank you for continuing to be a wonderful patient and friend and for choosing to live the “Chiropractic Lifestyle.” I commend you for taking charge of your health and the health of those you love!.

The Medicine Trap

In these modern times, the entire world seems to be more and more dependent on drugs. Drugs in war and drugs in peace, drugs to kill insects, drugs to wake you up and drugs to make you sleepy, drugs to speed you up and drugs to slow you down, drugs to relieve pain, drugs for every phase of life, young and old alike. Does this make any sense to you? It makes no sense to me!

More and more, the medical profession is questioning the misuse and overuse of prescribed drugs and are showing serious concern about the side effects of these drugs as well as the potential risk of addiction to them. We can’t listen to the radio, watch television or read a magazine advertisement without being alarmed by excessive urging for us to take drugs or give them to our children for every type of disorder. Take a moment and notice just how this advertising directly affects you and your family. Look in your medicine cabinet at home or your purse and your desk drawer at work. What form of medication do you rely upon? Is it any wonder people suffer needlessly from stress, nervous tension, digestive disorders, headaches and chronic pain? I ask you to STOP and research how you can escape from this medicine trap.

Doctors of Chiropractic do not prescribe drugs. For over 114 years, chiropractors have empowered people to understand that every function of the body is controlled and directed through the nerve system. Health comes from within. When the nerve system is clear of any interference and the communication from the brain to organs and tissues is 100%, the function of the body will be normal, and normal function brings health.

Optimal health is our most valuable possession.

Doctors of Chiropractic focus on the significance of the spinal column as the key to health. The spinal column is the strength and serves as support for the body. It connects the larger bones and the attachment of major muscles. And most important, the spinal column houses the spinal cord and contains openings between the vertebrae for nerves to exit and provide direct communication between the brain and the body. Thus, the spine is the master control center for the entire nerve system and the key to health!

During our busy everyday lives we experience different forms of stress such as physical stress (accidents, falls, lifting heavy objects, etc.), emotional stress (children, work, divorce, etc.), and chemical stress (processed foods, drugs, pollution, etc.) These forms of stress can cause misalignment of the spinal bones resulting in interruption of nerve flow and proper communication from the brain to the rest of the body. This is called a vertebral subluxation and results in diminished body function, lowered immune resistance and ultimately dis-eases.

Escaping The Medicine Trap

Chiropractic care is a health care approach based upon the body’s natural ability to heal itself and is a very important step in a commitment to optimal health. Optimal health is one of our most valuable possessions. We should value ourselves enough to strive for the highest level of health. When we take responsibility for the choices we make regarding health, we give ourselves the best opportunity to achieve all of our health goals. Chiropractic care can help give us the natural health we deserve when we commit to learning more about our body and take all of the necessary steps to stay well.

Easy Steps to a Long and Vital Life

Minimize The Stress

Before adding more things to our lives we must give thought to shedding some of the workload. Stress is a killer of life and vitality. Find ways to minimize it, whether through relaxation techniques, changing jobs or playing more.

Feed The Mind And Soul

Many psychological and social factors may either shorten or lengthen our lives. Getting enough sleep, having a sense of humor, developing a spiritual life, building long-term relationships with people, attending cultural events, and owning a pet have all been associated with extending life expectancy.

Don't Overindulge

Many times increased vitality can be felt immediately by reducing overindulgence in alcohol, caffeine beverages, junk food, candy and a heavy, high-fat diet.

Exercise The Body

For many people, exercising is not fun and it's hard to exercise consistently with a busy lifestyle. A fitness plan does not have to be elaborate to produce health benefits. Even a daily 30 minute walk has been shown to improve health.

Exercise The Brain

Staying mentally sharp is just as important as staying physically fit. Challenge the mind with new experiences, such as traveling, reading and being creative.

Eat A Natural Diet With Plenty Of Fruits And Vegetables

Fresh foods contain higher levels of vitamins than do processed foods.

Have A Purpose In Life

Long-lived individuals often feel they have a mission or special purpose in life. Never stop learning, working or finding new causes to promote.

Maximize Nerve System Function

Be sure the life and vitality flowing from the brain through the spinal column and nerve system are free of interference. Clear the way through chiropractic for the messages necessary for all organs, tissues, immune and other systems to work properly. Maximum nerve system function helps integrate other important health factors including proper rest, exercise, a nutritious diet and a good mental attitude.
